Wine Kits - Emilia-Romagna region

Emilia includes the cities of Modena, Reggio, Parma and Piacenza. This western part of the region is known for its Lambrusco although the wine known to the world is not what is consumed at home.

Both styles, sweet and dry, have been made since the 13th century.

Lambrusco's most notable characteristic is its frothiness. Even in the hills along the Apennine mountain range, the wines are often Frizzante. The whites are most often made from Malvasia, Trebbiano and Ortugo. The reds from Barbera and Bonarda.

Romagna lies on the eastern side of Bologna. The plains between Ferrara and Ravenna known as the Po basin are noted for high yielding vines that produce fruit for blending wines.

The hills in the southern part of the region are known for Sangiovese, Trebbiano and the native Albana which holds the distinction of having been Italy's first white Docg in 1987. Sangiovese, usually a medium bodied red in this region, remains the local favorite.
